Second Solo outing from the frontman of The New Pornographers(and
Zumpano). Like The NP`s, this album takes the pure pop sensibility of
that band and makes it a wee-bit more ambitious in scope incorporating
elements of The Move, Sparks(check out track #2 below), The New
Pornographers(of course), The Kinks, Harry Nilsson, Colin Blunstone, Andy
Partridge, Wayne Coyne, Brendon Benson and more. This one is more
ambitious than "Slow Wonder" - the melodies and arrangements take
unexpected detours which give the songs more depth with each listen.
""Few have the luxury of B-sides / I`ve got buckets full," New
Pornographers singer- guitarist Carl Newman brags on "Submarines of
Stockholm." Here, the Canadian power-pop ace unleashes another battery of
hooks with blasts of vocal harmonies (Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer) and
dabs of organ (Elemental). But Get Guilty dwells on the past, and that
pensive reflection mutes the second half, turning Newman`s boast into a
wistful memory. There are no careening pop juggernauts; just a couple of
chords, high-hat to punctuate the high notes, and choruses sung in caps
lock."-Spin. "4 stars. Carl Newman has been behind so many excellent
bands and albums that by 2009 it has become increasingly easy to take a
new album for granted, to mistake his steady craftsmanship for
complacency. While it`s true that Get Guilty doesn`t break any new
ground, you`d be wrong to think that Newman is treading water or just
cranking out albums because it`s his job. The album is full of songs that
would have made the cut for the New Pornographers` last couple albums --
in fact, some (like "The Heartbreak Rides" and "Submarines of Stockholm")
would have bested everything there. At the risk of sounding heretical, at
this point in time the A.C. Newman records are superior to the New
Pornographers albums...Call him a journeyman indie rocker if you like,
take him for granted if you must, just don`t write him off. Anyone who
can craft a record that sounds and feels as good as Get Guilty deserves
to keep on making records forever."-AMG. CRUCIAL.
