As I look out from my office window, it’s obvious that the seasons are changing, with the days no longer sunshiny and warm, instead now opting for a gray sky and a lingering cold wind that will only get more bitter as the days roll on. It’s also kind of wet. I’m listening to the first cut from Andrew Sandoval’s newest album, From Me to You, and I realize that, starting with said first song, this album is the perfect soundtrack for this time of year. “July to January” might as well be the season’s theme song. From Me to You is Andrew’s most accomplished title to date, bringing the sweet sounds of Brian Wilson, Michael Penn and Jon Brion to mind, mixing with a stark lyricism that is so emotionally stark that songs like “The Distance” (“…I’ll never love anything, anymore…”) and “No One Else” are brilliantly rendered songs that sting like the first few minutes after breaking up with your longtime girlfriend—to actually capture that feeling takes some skill. And Andrew, once again, proves just how skilled he really is.
