Finnish import and Bookends most definitely takes an inspiration from Simon & Garfunkel as they are a trio who are principally acoustically and piano based and most concerned with the vocal interplay between the three members reminding us in spots of the acoustic sounds of Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies("Failure"-era to be specific) in many spots and Ben Folds, America, Linus Of Hollywood and even REM in others. Beautiful, serene, semi-acoustic pop floating on an army of fluffy harmony vocals. "Bookends are masters of harmonious pop that relys strongly on acoustic elements and beautiful vocal arrangements.."Again" starts that pop heaven I was waiting for. It`s one of the strongest songs on the album and a perfect example of what makes Bookends better than several of their colleagues. It`s that singing and the vocal arrangements. If I would start listing my favourite vocalists, Bookends` lead vocalist Ville Tiril? wouldn`t be on that list. But still Bookends can make those vocal parts work so perfectly. Achingly beautiful vocal harmonies that slowly grow up and sets your heart on fire. I guess it might be a bit too much to compare them to Auer & Stringfellow, but during the finest moments of the album it surely sounds like Failure/Dear 23 -era The Posies. That perfect song Again does have a bit of The Posies in it, but the influences are most obvious in the last song Desert Island Records which does sound like an outtake from the first two The Posies albums. But The Posies is just one of their influences and those elements only appear in a few songs. So I apologize if I made it sound like they are some pointless cover band with nothing new to give. As a matter fact, it seems like they have much more to give because they don`t play it safe like most of guitar pop groups but are willing and able to make more difficult arrangements. They might go one step into wrong direction in a few occasions, but when they get things right the end result proves to be simply stunning..Seventh for the Song is a great debut. Not entirely faultless, but during it`s finest moments it`s just marvellous. If you are into intimate pop music that leans strongly on acoustic elements and singer-songwriter tradition, this album is like made for you. Think of names like The Posies, Ken Stringfellow, Ben Folds, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beach Boys. Beautiful singing, acoustic guitars and some beautiful keyboards as the core and some insightful arrangements that makes it all work.
