The Fighting Brothers McCarthy - Ladies And Gentlemen...

Not Lame has been trying for months to get this big `ole gem in here for you all to hear. Finally, Not Lame is over-joyed to bring this buried-deep treasure into the light. It`s going to appeal to most serious Not Lame regulars we think. Why? We`ll drop a long line of sounds we hear in here with caveat that they blend it all into their own sound: Sloan, Matthew Sweet, the poppiest moments of Wilco and The Jayhawks(think `Hollywood Town Hall`), The Smithereens, The Model Rockets and The Bigger Lovers. The attention to detail on this record is staggering; every sound, every heartfelt, vivid image is carefully placed and vocal harmonies creamier than caramel custard. Their sound is an amalgam of the best of rock and pop, driven by hooks and underpinned by a muscular backing band that knows how to turn a song around on a dime. The Brothers` harmonies intertwine with chiming guitars and swirling keyboards to create a blanket of sound. Familiar melodies and tones turn in new ways that move the listener. It`s music of, by and for the consummate music fan.

"Unlike many `brother` acts, these are two are blood-related and harmonize well enough to compose infectious pop without rancor. In an alternate universe, John Lennon might have hooked up with Neil Diamond and formed a hard pop band just like this (the McCarthys sometimes play in a Beatles tribute band affectionately called The Dung Beatles and appropriately cover "Two Of Us" here). Their sense of humor is intact on "Mamadawg", which opens "Ladies And Gentlemen" with jangling power admidst a little barking. Whether it`s their Midwest upbringing or not, "One Light Town" and "Say Goodbye" possess classic Jayhawks-type hooks (circa "Hollywood Town Hall"), though the later song might have more electric muscle. Such muscle is really flexed on the workout "Perfect Dream", which rocks with extra guitars. Kevin and Steve McCarthy are augmented by a strong backing on these 11 songs, which may have been recorded on a shoestring budget, but sound as slick as Penny Lane loafers"-Pop Culture Press. Big Time Extremely Highly Recommended!
