Steve Robinson - Undercurrent

2007 release from Steve Robinson and an most excellent followup to his debut "Away For The Day". Steve Robinson`s CD here brings a most pleasant, very clear memory from 1989 back into familiar resonance. Some of you out there will relate. In 1989, during all the hair metal all over the place, hearing Michael Penn on the radio, hearing "March" for the first few times, it was a feeling of being baptized by the music gods, a gift out of the blue. Steve Robinson not only sounds like Michael Penn, the songs do, as well(to add to his pedigree, he`s played in Roger McGuinn`s band on the Back To Rio tour!). I hear Richard Thompson, Martin Newell and Jules Schear all over the place as well. Lots of Neil Finn and Crowded House. What joy, eh?! Indeed, indeed. "Steve Robinson strides the line between pop and folk with the sure step of someone who has complete confidence in his own ability"-AmericanaUK. Unlike 2005`s DIY dark horse "Away For The Day","Undercurrent" is more of a collaborative affair and benefits from the sympathetic (bordering on telepathic, according to Steve) efforts of co-producer and multi-instrumentalist Ed Woltil(The Ditchflowers).

"Love Is Real" is a unapologetically "Beatley" pop song of love and commitment, "Please Emmalene" is a mandolin-fueled folk-rock expression of awe at the bond between parent and child and on and on it goes with 10 perfect songs on "Undercurrent". What I *really* love here is Robinson`s control to keep the arrangements simple and straightforward. His acoustic guitar is what holds down the melodies, keeping his backing band(when he even uses them) doing the basics and letting the structure of the song`s strength hold anchor in the harbor of lush, layered vocal memories and chiming acoustic guitars. This one hits the center of the target for what many Not Lamers look to us for and it`s the type of treasure that is rare, special and not to be missed, trust us. Extremely Highly Recommended!!
