The Scheme - Sunset On A Daydream

Classic modern-day power pop that is going to have pop pundits` tongues wagging and our fingies typing accolades galore! Boston`s The Scheme features David Thompson who was in the Pills and like his previous band, there`s all the elements of archetypal power pop here on "Sunset On A Daydream". Fans of Sun Sawed In 1/2, Sloan, "Bellybutton"-era Jellyfish, Tiny Volcano and The Odds.Take sparkly sonic textures sprinkled throughout the arrangements, add some shiny vocal harmonies all over the place(again, ala J-fish) that shine and a bit of spice around spunky, upbeat melodies and, finally, spread them out like sweet marmalade on a piece of crunchy, pop toast and you have one classic gem of a power pop album that is going to be one of the strongest indie releases of year.

Here`s what Boston zine The Noise has to say: "Paisley shirts, little toy men made from apples and gumdrops and toothpicks, dreamy harmonies, crystal clear production, soaring vocals, harpsichords and Mellotron synthesizers create the best Beach Boys album that Brian Wilson didn`t have anything to do with. Could almost pass for `Pet Sounds II`, if there were any songs about surfing and hot rods. But, because he concocted this brew of delectable pop in Boston, the songs are about sidewalks, front door keys, and nightclubs in Cambridge`s Central Square. And the basic power pop elements are all here, as well: ringing guitars, catchy melodies, and break-up songs! If you`re looking for something a little different, something with class and a touch of sophistication, then check out The Scheme`s Sunset On A Daydream." - The Noise. Big Time Extremely Highly Recommended!

  Customer Reviews
Slightly snarly sunshipe pop with sugary Saturday morning sentiment
Reviewer: Matt  Kennedy
The staff review likens this Beantown combo to Bellybutton era Jellyfish, and there are plenty of oohs and ahhs for certain, but the vocal delivery is much more like Best Kissers in The World (or a less earnest Material Issue), which is in the same league as Jellyfish if not necessarily the same ballpark. There's a lot of paisley underground feel to this 2006 curiosity, and it's more jangly than anything to come out of Boston since the Blake Babies. This is good, and it should definitely appeal to Jellyfish (and Bleu) fans, but I wouldn't set my expectations quite as high as I would with an Andy Sturmer release. If you liken this to latter day Teenage Fanclub or Imperial Teen, you'll walk away pleasantly surprised. I like it better than any of Jason Faulkner's solo CDs, but not as much as Fountains of Wayne. Like the latter, there's a slight Squeeze influence among the early 90s bands that seem more obviously to serve as the blue print. It's super poppy, and the harmonies are great. Those are the two primary ingredients for creating a modern power pop classic, so the lead vocals (if they're your cup of tea) are merely icing on the cake.
