Rebecca Turner - Land Of My Baby | Any record featuring the talents of Graham Parker`s Rumour band is going to get Not Lame`s attention so it`s a delight seeing Steve Goulding`s name on "Land Of My Baby", as well as Scott Anthony (Lloyd Cole, David Poe). Turner sings with the angelic beauty of early Linda Rondstadt, Laura Nyro, Susanna Hoffs, Robin Lane and Susan Cowsill. Big names to throw out, yes, but listen below and, then, nod in agreement. Just as fortunately, the
music can hold a candle alongside those names, too. It`s a mixture of
styles, all which blend wonderfully - Folk, pop, rock, country, pleasantly mishmashed... Good music for driving, or sitting outside on the porch, or looking out your bedroom window at the snow. Direct, intimate and vulnerable, this CD is an exploration of Turner`s affinity for different types of American music, but fans of Canadian Prairie styled folk-country-rock will find this a fascinating listen. "Land Of My Baby" embraces its musical affectations and translates them back in a distilled,
concentrated form all over the release. It`s funny, normally a release in
this realm is not my cup of tea, but after three complete listens, I find Rebecca Turner`s debut to be not only beguilingly fascinating, but eternally pleasing. Very Highly Recommended!

| | Excellent Songs and Brilliant Sounds | |
| Reviewer: Alex Sniderman | | Rebecca Turner's voice and songs conjure up a delightful musical mixture of Joni Mitchell's gentle soprano crossed with the light lyrical side of Lucinda Williams. Turner's delightful songs and the sympathetic backing, by some of New York's veteran musicians rock and pop players—including bassist Scott Anthony (John Pinamonti Band, also Turner's husband), Boo Reiners (Demolition String Band), roots rock wunderkind guitarist John Pinamonti, and drummers Bill Gerstel (Mad Scene, Raving Noah, Pinataland, The Actual Facts) and Steve Goulding (Graham Parker, The Mekons)—make this album truly a rare treat. Production duties were deftly handled by Anthony, a veteran NYC engineer/producer who's recorded everyone from Jimmy Scott to Daniel Lanois. You can't go wrong with this one! |
