You never what lurks out there on Not Lame’s customer list, folks! A month ago, long time mentioned he had a new wave/powerpop/rock band he was in from New Jersey back in the late 70s who played with a whole host of luminaries. Yeah, heard it before – and 95% of the time I h ear the output of such ‘revelations’ as being great excuses for a long-lost bands’ rightful obscurity. NOT the case here with Continental Crawler, a band who, stylistically, are all over the place and band who sound most certainly the product of the New York scene from 1977-1979, the years this material was recorded. (Punk Note: Drummer Jim Catania went on to be in the classic line up of The Misfits) There’s 24 songs here and it’s the first third of these songs that are not only worth the price of admission but reveals some major finds for folks like us. For those familiar with such faves of this era as The Laughing Dogs(New York Band) and pub rockers Ducks Deluxe, Songs #1, #2 and #3 are going to have you drooling – they did me. Other songs evoke Tuff Darts(#4 below) and Flamin’ Groovies around 1972. The first third are songs that are extremely well recorded and the rest of the collection gathers up mostly demos and live tracks that show a band unhindered and unconcerned with commercial standing or delusions – this is Beefheartian/Bonzo Dog Band/Velvet Underground excavations of a sound that would be impossible to replicate in the ‘double-naughts’. Some songs reminds us(this reference for the obscure of you) of very early Akron bands from the mid70’s like Rubber City Rebels, The Bizarros and Rocket From The Crypt. This project was meant to gather it all up for their fans and themselves but the first six songs and a bunch of others makes it more than that for real music fans of this period looking to discover new music from a long-bygone era.
