"GOOD MUSIC doesn`t require complex instrumentation. The lyrics, chords, David`s voice... it`s ALL perfect--flawlessly pure just the way it is. I have been a David Mead fan for a long time, so I was eagerly awaiting this new release. Finally, it became available here, so I bought it immediately. Upon first listen, I thought it was good, but a bit boring and uninspiring. However, on further listenings, you start to really hear the music and its nuances, and it`s quickly become a new favorite. The masterful combination of exquisite vocals and wonderfully written lyrics make for an amazing album. While one or two songs on the album left me wanting ("Mojave Phone Booth" for instance), the great majority of the album is excellent."-Amazon. "For his fifth studio album,
David Mead jettisons the primary-color pop of previous albums for a sparser, more urbane sound featuring light acoustic strumming, simple yet bold piano lines, and the occasional banjo and mandolin set deep in the background.
Though lacking the buzzy pop energy of 2004âs Indiana or 2006âs Tangerine, the new Almost and Always sounds like Mead is in his natural setting. He wears the production like a tastefully tailored suit, and if he doesnât have enough grit in his voice to convey the touchier emotions of the title track or âLove Donât Leave Me Now,â he still comfortably inhabits an upper register that lends âBlackberry Wintersâ and the Proustian âTwenty Girls Agoâ their sense of yearning and resignation. In this spare atmosphere, the relatively heavy orchestrations of âSleeping in Saturdayâ and âSicilyâ distract from Meadâs performance, but Almost and Always nevertheless is the most dapper album of his career."- Paste.
