Dwight Twilley - 47 Moons

This album came out in 2005 digitally and then it was available for a very short time on CD but was gone and out of print sometime in 2006. Back in print now, though! Bookended by the rockabilly-fueled romps "Better Watch Out" and "Flippin`," this is arguably the richest, most focused collection Twilley has cut since returning home to Tulsa in the mid-90`s. With original Twilley band guitarist Bill Pitcock IV adding a welcome edge, the veteran singer-songwriter`s innate gift for distilling his Elvis/Lennon-McCartney fixations into timeless pop perfection is showcased on songs that range from the impressionistic, neo-lullaby title track and haunting harmonies of "King of the Mountain" to "Chance of a Lifetime"`s trademark goldmine-of-hooks and the melancholy melodramatics of "To Wait is to Waste." Twilley remains both resilient power-pop icon and fiercely independent artistic spirit, a legacy that reverberates from every cut here.

"3 1/2 stars. a full-length album specializing in `60s styled pop/rock. Twilley`s vocal and instrumental style reminds one of a cross between Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, a sweet confection concocted from multiple levels of voices, guitars, piano, and, on occasion, bells. Like listening to a Spector tune, there`s a certain light, effervescent quality to songs like "Walkin` on Water" and the title cut. In this way, Twilley`s music seems innocent and happy. These winning qualities are muted somewhat, though, by the similarity of the material and excessive length of many of the songs. Twilley`s vocals and the vocal arrangements seem better suited for songs like "Chance of a Lifetime" and "Better Watch Out," fairly short songs with upbeat rhythms and catchy hooks. Shortness, after all, has always been a hallmark of pop. Twilley fans, however, will be glad that the master pop-smith is back in action, and find much to like about 47 Moons." -AMG.
