Canadian import. After two truly outstanding albums, Dean Drouillard goes for the creative juggular and delivers his strongest, finest with the stellar "In Dream At Harmony Hotel". Fans of Jon Brion, David Mead, Josh Rouse, Micheal Penn, Duncan Sheik and Elliot Smith, well simply put, this is a must check-out and listen release. Like on "Dust" and "In Other Words", the performances of each instrument add to the gentle, understated atmosphere of the recording, never drawing attention to themselves. Ethereal and delicate electric guitars, lush harmonies, toy keyboards, and glockenspiel surround Dean`s hushed voice and acoustic guitar. But what`s different on this outing is there are other talents contributing. Previous recordings reveal Dean playing the majority of the instruments himself. But for his latest self-produced release Dream At Harmony Motel, he chose to invite his favourite musicians to add their own character to his most detailed work to date. Bacharach-esque horns, circus`y accordion, 80s synthesizer and lazy banjo give the collection a whimsical quality, playing like a soundtrack to some unusual romantic drama. Sparse arrangements and mellow, playful guitar, set the foundation for his delicate vocals and personal insight. "Harmony Hotel" is a sonic adventure and unique approach to pop music with influences from the `60s to the present, resulting in a sound like Jellyfish accompanying Elliott Smith, or Ennio Morricone producing Brian Wilson. This is a moody assemblage of spacious songs, a collection of late-night wistful recordings, lyrically revealing Dean`s reflective observations about the people and situations he sees in everyday life. Extremely Highly Recommended.
