UK ONLY CD - 2010 Studio release! "4.5 out 5. It`s trite to draw comparisons but we all need a frame of reference so how about XTC, Queen, The Beatles and a dash of Cheap Trick? Outstanding!" - The Guardian. "8 out of 10. "Eternal Struggle for Justice" starts out with a lurching organ and dark tone more suited to Bryan Scary, than Jellyfish - although an angelic choral break at the songs middle is more like it. Then the blare of a Motown styled horn section greets us on "Everyone Becomes The Road They Take" and it`s clear the album has a more varied theatrical theme. It isn`t as immediate as it`s predecessors, but there are plenty of great songs here. One gem for sure is the brilliant power ballad "We Sold It All," starting with a gentle McCartney-like melody that evolves into a rich rock guitar tapestry full of Queen-like touches, you almost expect it to be a finale... but these guys are just getting started. Fans of XTC will love the macabre melodies like "Waiting To Die" and "Wonderful" taking the listener on a compelling journey full of rich imagery. These songs intercut dramatic piano and heavy guitar with contrasting sweet melodic breaks in the chorus, especially in "Wonderful" where it feels like an entire album`s worth of themes are condensed into four minutes. The big melodic jewel in this album`s crown is "Pornography" with a boogie beat piano melody that recalls ELO and cascading harmonies that flourish each verse." - Power PopAholic blog. "It is a travesty that Willie Dowling and Jackdaw4 aren`t household names, as the skill and musical awareness displayed throughout The Eternal Struggle For Justice is at times quite breath taking and amazingly accessible for such complex, yet catchy music.
You could call it power-pop, some might call it progressive-pop, Willie calls it Eclecto-pop. I call it brilliant...another dazzling blast of gloriously melodious power-pop. Whilst The Eternal Struggle For Justice may have eschewed the sharper edged guitars that drove some of the tracks on the band`s debut album Gramophone Logic, the amazing vocal structures and harmonies remain the focus for the eclectic map of influences that Jackdaw4 have brought to everything they have recorded. Band names like XTC, Jellyfish, Queen or The Beatles are often bandied about to try and help to pin down the seductive range of sounds presented by this band, however while all of those named above do offer a glimpse of what is served here, in truth for those of us lucky enough to already be in the know, these songs could only be one thing and that is Jackdaw4. " - Sea Of Tranquility. "a power pop classic, and probably the best power pop album to be released in 2010.
Willie Dowling is one of the best song writers of his generation." - Sinister Angels Realm. Extremely Highly Recommended!
