ARMAGEDDON - s/t | 2005 German import with booklet containing great liners from Chris Welch w/ the whole story...What better name for a heavy metal band?! Yet Armageddon was the brainchild of a gentle, peace-loving musician whose previous band had represented the ultimate in hippie idealism. So what led mild-mannered Ex-Yardbirds Keith Relf into this battleground of musical militancy? It seemed we should never know the answer, for the vocalist and harmonica player who put the band together died in 1976. However, new research reveals that it was never Keith`s intention to go back to truly heavy rock and this is a very progressive type of mid 70`s hard rock. Criticized as sounding "dated" when initially released, this is one of the strong points of this album. Many of the best hard rock acts of the time (Purple-Stormbringer, Zeppelin-Presence, Sabbath-Sabatoge, etc) were moving on to slicker production of less gritty songs. Armageddon sounded like it was from an earlier and more "real" musical time.
