Jim Boggia - Safe In Sound

Truly incredible, very special 2005 release from a long time fave of ours here at Not Lame. Check this one out, for sure! His album mixes smart multi-layered pop rock songs with quirky sound snippets you`ll recognized from your youth. Modern sounds from Jon Brion, Owsley, Julian Coryell(who plays on a bunch of songs here), Bleu and The Grays. Definitely some poppy Elliot Smith and The Eels/E. This is a jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring album! On another level, Jim Boggia is part Michael Penn, Stevie Wonder, Todd Rungren and Brian Wilson. Boggia writes soothing, quieting, sublime melodies inside songs that vary from the introspective to the rocking, upbeat band pop. Get a load of the guests on this: Aimee Mann, Jill Sobule, Julian Coryell, Pete Thomas(Elvis Costello), Wayne Kramer(MC5!) and, get this, im managed to convince reclusive seventies pop legend Emitt Rhodes to add Beatle-esque background vocals to the lovely, happy-sad Let Me Believe (Evans Lament), which Rhodes also co-wrote! What more needs to be said? Okay, I`ll try.

Boggia plays guitar and a vast array of other instruments such as the glockenspiel, ukulele, Mellotron, Optigan, piano, and toy keyboards. He incorporates these sounds within the standard verse/chorus/bridge structure resulting in his own new and innovative twist to pop music. The 12 track album adds gracefully to Boggias growing songwriting reputation which prompted the Philadelphia Weekly to write, Varying traces of the Beatles, the Raspberries, Big Star, Elvis Costello, Simon & Garfunkel and even Stevie Wonder find their way into Boggias songwriting recipe, one that is firmly anchored in the then and now. Big Time, Extremely Highly Recommended!
