This album features the help of both Roger and Chris Manning (both of Jellyfish) so you know it is going to be a quality project right from that bit of information. Chris Manning does an absolutely superb job in producing all of "Stellar Transmission" and bringing the many nuanced layers clearly to the ear and, at the same time, making an immediate impression despite the lofty nature of the music going on here. Please - get in there below and just listen - there is six of the 10 songs you can sample here. I have listened to this album four times in the last week or so and I find something new that I missed before but, more importantly, to enjoy. It is well-crafted melodic mosaics and richly textured arrangements glide, shine and pulse confidently with a life of their own. This is the kind of music that gives music fans hope that artists are trying to push the boundries of making more mediocre pablum. From beginning to end, "Stellar Transmission" is filled with interesting melodic interpretations and slow-building, yet immediate eruptions of delicate harmonies. Cool? You bet! The influences are hard to pin down and none really harken strongly to the reference points: no doubt, though - it is grounded in a distinct love of baroque British pop of the last 30/40 years. Aprils Rain make challenging and sophisticated music that is as entertaining as it is creative.
