Norway`s Popgun know how to ROCK their POP - righteously. Pay Attention fans of sweet and crunchy pop as Popgun deliver in a way that is like overdosing on Hostess Sno-Balls..an blast of power pop sure to give you cavities. A tablespoon of Buzzcocks, some Teenage Fanclub, a scent of Nick Lowe, The Lemonheads on a Sunday Drive, a health dose of classic Scandi-Pop Drive(the boys are Norwegian, afterall) and you`re pretty close...but most of all they sound like themselves! There are two albums on the site and in his review. "Manic Anti-Depressive" is their latest from 2008 and "A Day And A Half" is from 2004 and there are only a handful of copies left of that one - so do NOT WAIT as Not Lame has the last of them. Both albums pop hard and are a refreshing display of nice LOUD jangling guitars, solid rhythms and sugar-sweet harmonies lighting the fuse on a tasty box of Euro styled chocolates. This thunderous pop band knows how to take edgy, gritty guitars and hard wire them to bouncy pop hooks all driven by power packed melody! These are smashing rock-solid songs with deft and irrepressible charm. " 8 out of 10. There are no surprises, then, but that`s not what they`re about. Popgun promise punchy, guitar-driven power-pop that`s bouncy and energetic, and that`s what they deliver from start to finish. The titles are brilliantly dumb and overtly punk, from the opener `F*cked Up,` through `All Messed Up,` `Hey Dummy!` and `Everything I Don`t Like,` but it`s nihilism with a grin. Upbeat and catchy as hell, Popgun`s exuberance is infectious. Above all, `Manic Anti-Depressive` is mentally unchallenging in the best possible way, and because of this, is a thoroughly enjoyable album." - Whispering And Hollering. Perhaps something about living near the Arctic Circle makes musicians favour wide-eyed sincerity over talent.
Every song is approached head-on, with no messing around. Vocals are blasted out without a care for key or tone, lyrics sound like they were written by a horny thirteen-year old, and everything else is all pretty basic much of the time. There`s a handful of natty bits: the intro to "Parasite" is reverb-y at first followed by chunky riffing, "Everything I Don`t Like", admittedly does has a Gallagher swagger, and the frantic, sweaty, guitar solo on "All Messed Up" is fun.
