PUGWASH - Giddy

One of the more exciting, daring power pop acts of this decade, continue their evolution and critical approval with the release of "Giddy". Pugwash have now caught attention of Andy Partridge who has decided to release "Giddy"which is a compilation of past material with 2 new songs - song listing below) on his label..."it`s not too much of a surprise to find the material here something that XTC fans might appreciate in the melange of vintage rock influences. Like many such bands, they don`t do this with the skill of XTC. But listeners who like modern mash-up-like takes on mid-`60s to early-`70s forms of progressive pop/rock should enjoy Pugwash`s well-produced songs, in which there are echoes of the melodies and harmonies of well-loved greats like the Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, Jeff Lynne in his Move/ELO days, and so forth. The lighter sides of these groups seem to be prevalent influences, with a number of softer/wistful/whimsical tunes in the style of Paul McCartney`s folkier outings or the Beach Boys` mellower approach."AMG.

""Overflowing with gentle, gorgeous Beatle-ish pop (McCartney, rather than Lennon), and blissed-out gems such as `Sunrise Sunset` indicate immediately why it`s on Ape - the label run by XTC`s Andy Partridge."" - Entertainment News. "The further the CD runs, the more sophisticated it gets. Halfway through, you`re drowning in dreamtime symphonies replete with strings, synthesizers, and mellotrons...Sunrise Sunset is a Julia-esque (Beatles) track while Monorail is vaguely Bonzo Dog Band and 10CC-ish by way of Steve Miller. The overriding vibe, as can be seen, is a 60s / 70s grand panoramic sound blown out to the edges of the tradition, and, if there are more than six CDs that have been made like this in the last decade, I`d sure as hell like to know of `em, `cause this is damned remarkable." - AcousticMusicReview.

"Giddy is a solid compilation of tracks from the Irish band Pugwash, which debut power-pop album released in 1999. Pugwash, aka songwriter Thomas Walsh and friends, has been an instant favorite of Irish and British music critics but has not had much success here. This album was compiled by Andy Partridge (XTC) and Walsh as 11 tracks here have been re-mastered from the original multi-tracks and span the bands career. It also includes two additional new songs from their forthcoming record Eleven Modern Antiquities scheduled for release in January 2010. Pugwash have a very likable sound that fits in the style category of the Beatles, Squeeze, Crowded House and The Zombies. Giddy is the perfect introduction and showcases that Pugwash is worth the time and should be checked out if you have never heard them before." - The Fire Note.

Superb overview of the genius of Thomas Walsh and friends, i.e. Pugwash

I discovered Pugwash quite by accident, well by email actually. I was minding my own business having sent an email to an online music forum when I got an email from Thomas Walsh, who had read my email, telling me he had a band that was pretty good. I thought he was either mad, arrogant or amazingly talented. Well he turned out to be amazingly talented. That album was Almanac and I have had the good fortune to buy all the Pugwash albums and meet Thomas Walsh who is in person very charming, great fun and far too modest. This compilation is a great introduction to Pugwash, who are influenced by ELO, the Beatles, XTC, Traveling Wilburys and many others. The songs are brilliantly crafted, outshining their influences on many occasions. There is not a bad track on any of the albums and this compilation is a pretty decent effort at giving some of the Pugwash flavour. Some brilliant stuff has of course been left off and I would recommend any of the albums if you like this one. For some bizzare reason Pugwash have not had a massive hit, which is probably down to the fact that they are all born in 1969 and are not liable to appeal to pre teens. This is great adult orientated power pop/rock. Their new album 11 Modern Antiquities is due out in the States soon I believe, it has already been released in Ireland, and is quite superb. Also worth checking out is an album by the Duckworth Lewis Method (Thomas Walsh with Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy) which is equally good.
