Been some years since we last heard from Rich McCulley, who has three strong records on this site alongside this new one. "Starting All Over Again" leaps ahead of those that came before. This is top-notch roots-pop. Think Tom Petty, Bill Lloyd, The Jayhawks, Pete Droge, John Hiatt and echoes of solo Westerberg, with his warm, reedy vocal-style and songs that has a Nils Lofgren/Grin-esque charm to it. Adam Marsland and Todd Herfindal appear here to offer their talents, but McCulley is in inspired form here on his own. "His pop sensibilities shine through in his roots rock. Opening track "Tell Me, I`m Listening" (co-written with Herfindal) is Exhibit A for this thesis, a highly melodic track that Meadows and McCulley fans will both love. "Dreams Tonight" is an excellent "Take It Easy"-style number, and "The Last Song" boasts an infectious melody as well, although here`s hoping McCulley doesn`t follow through on his promises in the lyrics. Elsewhere, standouts include "Who`ll Hang the Moon?", his soulful tribute to Jarvis, the rockin` "Nowhere", the John Hiatt-esque "Waiting on the Sun", and the lively "Falling Apart". Roots-pop/rock albums don`t get much better than this one, and McCulley has outdone himself here." - Absolute Power Pop blog. "McCulley support`s his own smooth vocal playing electric, slide, acoustic and dobro guitar - additional instrumentation is provided by a host of talented musicians, fleshing the sound out with keyboards, horns, strings and percussion on this McCulley`s fourth full length release. The package is a highly engaging collection of roots rock at the smoother end of the scale, the delivery is slick but not syrupy, the sound familiar without ever descending into pastiche, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish there`s no filler here, an honourable tribute."- Beat Surrender blog. If pop with a rootsy songwriting spirit is `your thing`, "Starting All Over Again" is Extremely Highly Recommended and a winner beginning to end.
