One funny, clever, cool and, most importantly, talented and highly listenable band, folks. They have minted(sic) a sound, an aesthetic that is, arguably their own. The sounds on these 14 tracks(plus 4 bonus trax, one of which offer up the best way for a band to approach listing all their `thank yous`---via song!) are not easy to pin down---and that`s a very good thing for those of you looking for something on the different side of things. For our ears, the Figgs, The Replacements, Sloan sounds are undeniable(RC share those bands` sharp wit but sharper grasp of writing catchy songs), but dig deeper you`ll trip across Uncle Tupelo, Green On Red, Violent Femmes, The Long Ryders. But on top of all those rootsy bands there`s a beating heart dedicated to boozy type pop-craft that made the Replacements work so well, a sharpened, keen sense on when to swell the melodic to the forefront, when to layer those vocals, when to break out that sing-a-long chorus---and handclaps. This the type of band you want to play your backyard party every summer because they`ll know how to play any and all song requests you throw at them - and not suck. "San Diego City Beat described Rookie Card as "Hyper-literate irony rockers". Take away the tinge of journalistic hyperbole, and Rookie Card still stands out as one of the best bands you`ve never heard of. Luckily not living up to their name`s sake, Rookie Card are far from being musical neophytes, they`re more like veterans of a forgotten art form: making good music. "-SDMusicMatters. It`s literally a bit of this, and a bit of that, mixed together for songs that are as hook filled as any you`re likely to come across.
