Saul Zonana returns and confirm what most us have known for years - he has a complete inability to deliver a mediocre album. "Phatso" is freakin` awesome! As usual, there`s plenty of displays of Beatles, Jellyfish and other pop greats` fetishisms. All Zonana`s music is filled w/ the splendorous guitar, high energy hooks and expressive vocals found, the music falls into the schooling of such artists like aforementioned, as well as Matthew Sweet, Todd Rundgren, Rick Altizer, Michael Penn and The Candy Butchers. It`s the type of power pop that would be right at home on most FM rock-oriented radio stations if radio played decent music. But it`s highly intelligent music at all corners. Every song here is full of rich, melodic steam, filled with superb twists of the wrist or surprising and delightful eruptions of harmony, while the production is stunning. Zonana grew up listening to his older brother`s Beatles, Who, and Police records. These influences peek through like sun on a cloudy day via Zonana`s selective use of melodies, chords, harmonies and razor-sharp, Lennon-like vocals.There are always new sounds to grab on to though the overall concept is always wrapped in the same Zonana package of unforgettable songs. This is not your run of the mill one good song and the rest filler situation here people. This is one of the few times that we`re not over using the word artist. In other words Zonana, to me, was born in the wrong generation of musicians. In a perfect world we`d be thinking of this guy right along the bands that he was raised with. Extremely Highly Recommended!!
