2010 release from Shake Some Action, their 4th album! Recalling an era when jangly guitars and rich vocal harmonies fueled melodic pop songs, the band`s influences are such luminaries as the La`s, Hoodoo Gurus, the Kinks, the Beatles, You Am I, Stone Roses, Big Star, the Hummingbirds, the Small Faces and Teenage Fanclub. Power pop is the realm where Shake Some Action! exist: finely crafted songs you can dance to with a bittersweet edge that make them perfect for any guy or gal who likes to rock but has, you know, feelings. "Yah" for feelings! "There is no doubt "Fire and Ice" will satisfy fans of Shake Some Action! and find some new recruits as well. I am a huge fan of Hoodoo Gurus, and Shake Some Action! is my new Hoodoo Gurus..."Fire and Ice" follows the sophomore effort, "Sunny Days Ahead", a truly radiant power pop affair with influences from Flamin` Groovies to Teenage Fanclub (review here). "Fire and Ice" does indeed run hot and cold, the fire being ignited at the beginning with intensely infectious tracks like "Stand and Deliver", "Touch the Sky", and the title track. "Can You Feel?" is a beautiful mid-tempo number that is one of my favorites on the CD. After this comes the cooler part of "Fire and Ice", but things heat back up again at the close with great rockers like "Where Is The Sun?" and the harmonica-laced party closer, "You Can`t Say No", which reminds me of The Soup Dragons. Vocalist and chief songwriter James Hall, which is a near dead ringer for Dave Faulkner of The Hoodoo Gurus, sounds better than ever, using more harmonies and falsettos to augment the melodies he belts out."- Bill`s Music Forum. "8 out of 10. The sound of this band has evolved in the process from the earlier rough garage jangle sound to a sophisticated studio effort. This is more of James Hall`s baby and it shows. Those guitars are still there and he mixes in a few new influences. Opening with "Stand and Deliver" it mixes psychedelic vocals and ringing guitar rhythms that reminds me a little of U2 mixed with The Happy Mondays. Hall`s musical skills are on display with the steady bass and looping guitar arpeggio of "Touch The Sky." If you`re a bit nostalgic for those 80`s jangle hooks of The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Cure and Psychedelic Furs you get a real gift with several tracks like the hook-filled "Fire and Ice", "Can You Feel?" and "I Wasn`t Born Yesterday." The trippy "Bottom Of The Sea" sets a real nice Pink Floyd styled mood and "Where is The Sun?" is a shimmering gem with a rich harmonic chorus."- Power Pop Aholic blog.
