I rarely quote bands from their bios when I talk about a record here but with Shane Lamb, I make an exception these words come from an artist who understand where he`s coming from, what inspires and motivates him to write and can communicate it to someone who has not heard his music before. Lamb writes: "There is a line in Dylan`s "Trying to Get to Heaven" that states, `when you think that you`ve lost everything, you find out that you can always lose a little more.` This record started for me in such a place in my own life. But I knew I didn`t want to stay there. I wanted to honor it, to move through it, but not run from it...and not stay there too long.
These songs came out of a period of loss and disillusionment, soul searching, anger, fear, acceptance and the joy of new possibilities. What was a period of no creativity and songwriting, which scared me to death, grew into one of the most creative and focused periods of my life. It seems we have to lose some stuff to make room for new things in our lives... Musically, artists and records like, Tom Petty`s "Wildflowers," Echo" and "The Last DJ"; Neil Young`s "After the Gold Rush"; the Black Crowes "Amorica"; Bob Dylan`s " Time Out Of Mind" and "Oh, Mercy"; the Band; Ray LaMontagne; John Lennon, Emmy Lou Harris "Wrecking Ball" and Ryan Adams` "Cold Roses" and "Heartbreaker" felt right to me during this period." ""Lamb mixes pop, classic rock and Americana, and comes through with one quality tune after another. Every year it seems that I come across a singer-songwriter who makes a great `Ryan Adams` album. Of course I am speaking of the Ryan Adams of `Gold` and `Heartbreaker` and this year it is Shane Lamb." - Absolute Power Pop blog. "Songwriting wise, Lamb is a blend between Petty and Dylan-not too sparse, not too wordy but able to make his point amid very heartfelt statements and slice-of-life lyrics bolstered with melodies that stick. As a vocaloist, Lamb has a reedy tenor which serves his tales well. To me, the most surprising aspect of this entire album is the decision to call the album `disengage.` For me, Lamb`s music is so engaging, there is no way I would want to separate myself from it. The eye for miniscule detail is there. The ability to craft a clever line. The melodic sense and the ability to make each word meaningful are all evident in Lamb`s music and bode well for his success in the music business."-Scott Homewood, the Rock n Roll Report. Even before I put on "Disengage" and listened to it, I glanced at the credits and immediate saw the name of Pat Buchanan playing guitar all over this. Buchanan, one of Nashville`s finest and tastiest guitar slingers adds a unique dimension of sensitivity to anything he plays on so Lamb bringing him on shows he man is not messing around and, indeed, "Disengage" is a release to take serious note of and let seep into your soul and warm the depths of any troubles that may need some music to salve any wounds. Exactly what great music should stand and deliver upon.
