Silver Sun - Dad`s Wierd Drec

UK only and late 2006 studio release from a long, long time fave here at Not Lame, so this is a big deal. Their 90`s releases are long out of print and rare. The disappeared for some years and reappeared two years ago with "Disappear Here" (still available) and return with Dad`s Weird Dream and it`s confirmed: this band is hot, revitalized and relevant. Succinctly, Silver Sun make fuzz-filled instant explosions of melodic dynamite. What has been written about them in the past is still accurate and relevant now and we quote: Silver Sun released one of the great debuts from the UK in the 90`s(sadly, out of print). Said best by AMG: "sugar-coated melodies drenched in a heavy buzzsaw guitar attack and heavenly harmonies. Falling somewhere between the Buzzcocks and Cheap Trick". "James Broad really knows how to write a catchy pop song; well, what he really knows, I think, is how to write catchy bubblegum songs, because that`s what these 10 creations are, sugar-dripping confections that will raise your blood sugar level to heretofore unreached heights, but in a good way. Guitars are constantly a-blazing, the drums are in your face, and the singing, both in the foreground and background, is simply tremendous in classic pop tradition. It`s really quite a thing, this album.. As Broad sings in the closing number, you can`t kill rock `n` roll, which, I guess, is the point of this album, all gussied up in pop clothes and appropriate accessories. Well, I`d rather call it a marriage of rock and pop and say that catchier doesn`t come more plugged in than it does with this punchy half-hour of dazzling hook-heavy artistry."-Alan Haber, Buhdge.com.

" A decade on and Silver Sun have completed the fantastic 4. New album Dad`s Weird Dream is in my opinion, the icing on the cake with huge dollops of buttercream and chocolate sprinkles. If you`re a fan of SS then you won`t be reading this review - right now you`ll be playing air guitar to the album in a wolf mask and your dad`s speedo`s. Actually that`s probably just me. But moving on, Facts of Life is the best SS song you`ll ever hear. And See Me In My Dreams is an extremely close second. Poppin, Hi Scorpia, Sweet Lucy... where do I start? Fuzzy guitars, a million harmonies, big catchy feelgood choruses - James Broad writes perfect power pop. is name should be trademarked and be a currency in Africa. Why he hasn`t earned every accolade the music industry has to offer is beyond me. How many songwriters deliver EVERY time? Buy this album and you`ll know what I`m talking about. Who do they sound like? Well they`ve got their own distinctive sound but if pushed I`d say SS are like a heavy Electric Light Orchestra minus the orchestra! But maybe that`s coming... Dad`s Weird Dream is stuff music dreams are made of - FACT OF LIFE!"-Gourock.

" Think of all the music we`ve had in those nine years it makes your head spin. And heres the news: Silver Sun seem to have ignored all of it. They sound exactly the same as they did on their debut. But lets get it clear, this is nothing to worry about in fact, for lovers of their previous albums, it will come as a relief. The fuzzy guitars, perfect harmonies and effortless James Broad vocals are present. The Cheap Trick mashed with Beach Boys sound is there. And, unlike the band`s unsuccessful second album Neo Wave, so are the tunes. Opener Hi Scorpia, Find Him and Love Him, Rock n Roll Widow and Poppin are so tuneful, they could pop Hermans Hermits bubblegum...Don`t think of that unchanged sound as stagnation it`s the kind of English Heritage conservation we should be applauding."--RockBeatStone.
