Skytone - Echoes In All Directions

Canadian brother-duo who blend influences of early Posies, some Fountains Of Wayne with some moody, post-BritPop sounds. Skates gently through a quietly pretty blend of the aforementioned sounds all woven together with solid poppy laid-back songwriting. Echoes In All Directions contains a consistently enjoyable melange of striking influences brought together with great care in each songs arrangements and the craftsmanship of each song. "4 stars. Skytone are probably the only Ottawa band - maybe the only Canadian band - producing power-pop this melodic, structured and free from pretension. The `70s/`90s British influences just drip out of the speakers, as if Badfinger had climbed on stage with The Bluetones at Glastonbury. But why steal Skytone`s thunder with comparisons? Rodney Doddridge is an able vocalist and versatile lead guitarist, bringing brother Darius (bass) in for harmonics at all the right moments. The melodies are simple, with notes drawn out over the full four bars in most songs - just how good, catchy power-pop should sound."-HourCanada.

"4 stars.. The album is a power pop gem reminding you of `90s era Brit-pop mixed with a Steely Dan/Christopher Cross sensibility. The songs are mostly light-hearted breezy affairs led by Rodney`s acoustic guitar and stellar voice. Highlights include "The New York Song," a ditty about the Big Apple an the confusion one feels when new to the city, "Springtime," a mellow-toned and harmony-driven track about getting away from it all, and "Just a Little Attention," a Tragically Hip inspired song about a girl needing some face time. After a few listens you can`t help but sing along to most of the songs as Echoes in all Directions is quite infectious. The Doddridge brothers have that special gift of mixing original ideas with the more popular trends from the last 30-plus years to bring a fresh uplifting listen for all but a few to enjoy."FullSpectrum. Blissful

Skytone are on the label The Beautiful Music and that's a great moniker for their sound. Very good Bass and Guitars, but it's the voice that will grab you. Very out front and melodic. This is shimmering, mellow (yet still fun) pop. Some of these songs are simply majestic; the last 3 songs don't measure up to the first six; otherwise this is 5 stars. Very, very good.
