TEENAGE FANCLUB - Shadows

Excellent return from The Fannies in 2010! Five long years since their last album "Man-Made" was released to universal acclaim, Teenage Fanclub release "Shadows" to keen anticipation. Pitchfork calls Scotland`s Teenage Fanclub "the standard-bearers of modern power pop." Continued, "no one comes close to their mastery of the genre." While most bands are lucky to have one great songwriter, Teenage Fanclub are blessed with three, hence Shadows is overflowing with the kind of gorgeous, harmony-driven classics you`d expect to find on a greatest hits album.

"4 stars. Teenage Fanclub are on track to deliver a new album every five years. For longtime fans who remember the first time they heard "The Concept" off the band`s classic 1991 album Bandwagonesque, that level of output may seem a bit stingy, but when considering TFC`s consistently high-quality songwriting, no true "Fannie" fan is likely to complain. In that sense, Teenage Fanclub`s 2010 album Shadows is a sparkling and reflective follow-up to the band`s stellar 2005 effort, Man-Made. Released on the band`s own Pema imprint in the U.K. Merge in the U.S. Shadows picks up on the introspective, world-weary quality of Man-Made but also delivers a bit of the classic bright pop the band is known for. Where Man-Made found the band struggling with feeling like life was an illusion on the dogged "It`s All in My Mind," here you get Love`s breezy baroque pop statement of purpose "Sometimes I Don`t Need to Believe in Anything," with its chorus of layered synth, strings, flutes, and sundry wind instruments..If the day is as sun-drenched and relaxed as the songs on Shadows implies, then may it and Teenage Fanclub go on and on. "- AMG.

Improving, but still...

This is probably the best TFC album since "Songs From Northern Britian" - but - like so many of their recent offerings, the album is too tame and by the end of the last track, there`s nothing that really stands out. TFC has indeed matured, but mature should not equate to boring.

The Teenage Fanclub will never die...

Star Sign, is a Noise Pop dream song and then there is my favorite "RADIO". Bands usually change as they grow, this is ok and worthy of band loyalty. The Fanclub retains my loyalty with this album. -awesome is an understatement. Was it the management that held them back ? maybe misclassified ? So many good bands out there and the fanclub is at the top of my list. AT 40 years old....
