Drool Brothers have a sound that is truly their own - " Ajax Muffler" is an original dose of many musical styles and influences, wrapped inside a humor-filled package that make is a truly beguiling and irresistibly, captivating release. It`s hard to pin down general references as each song has a different launching pad but you`ll hear such oddities as Captain Beefheart/Zappa playing with CCR and The Neville Brothers on the same night. Others remind me of Adrian Belew, as well as Barenaked Ladies, Camper Van Beethoven and The Flaming Lips. Like we hinted at....eclectic, but oh so very cool! This is the 3rd full length release for the Drool Brothers. Chuck Mancillas, Tom Slik and Joe Kramer piece together an eclectic array of deconstructed pop music underneath ghetto grooves from the garage. Like their uncle`s garage in East Los Angeles, AJAX MUFFLER, greasy metal fragments, once unusable are dangerously pieced together to form warped versions of what things are supposed to be. This record is not unlike a dragster or a low-rider created by someone who doesn`t have much money, but has the will to create what is in their mind. Stories of cynicism and vulnerability are told through a soundscape made from home made fuzz boxes, swirling farfisa organ, heroin influenced hot rod bongos, 70sglitter rock dreams, blaxploitation grooves and other orphaned sounds found only in AJAX MUFFLER. Sounds like Zappa, Cheap Trick, Beck, Weezer and Flaming Lips.
