Australian Import. Not sure how this one showed up here - It just did and I have no idea why, how or who they are and I`ve been trying to find out - but I did find THIS out. The Gronks are two blokes from New South Wales recording at home in a pop groove. Touchstones include Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Big Star, Beatles, the Ramones and Devo. Instrumentation is minimalist stripping the songs to their bare bones, often only guitar and drums. And the bones are good. Think of them as a more organic Field Music. "Dirt" opens things up with a chanted, "Worms! Dirt! Worms! Dirt!" before settling into a sultry groove while the boys extol the virtues of life on the farm. With a fatter bottom, "Tribeca" might have come off an early Move album. "Pot o Gold" also has unmistakable Move vibe.
The Gronks evoke Pink Floyd on "Touch the Sun," but all these musical reference points dont detract from the Gronks original sound, defined by their minimalist arrangements and distinctive vocals. When they add a flute, as they do on "Happens (All the Time,") it enhances rather than detracts from their minimalism. Very Highly Recommended! (Mike Baron)
