THE JETSET - The Best Of: Swings & Roundabouts (2CDs)

UK 2 CD set. 50 songs! The Jet Set were one of the oddest footnotes in British pop music history. Loosely associated with the mod-revival of the late-70s, they took the revival one step further. Not only did they recreate the sounds of `60s pop but they also attempted to mirror the careers and myths of their idols with near-Rutles-esque, attempting a media blitz which included a proposed television series, Christmas greeting flexi-singles, comic strips, trading cards, and an array of fake Jet Set-related products. Though they never really made it out of the underground and have been forgotten by all but mod/pop fetishists, The Jet Set left behind an impressive body of work. "4 1/2 stars. The Jetset turned out guitar pop and unabashedly worshipped `60s pop -- not just the music, but the kitsch and culture. In short, they were an anachronism in the mid-`80s, and they sound even more so years later. That doesn`t mean this sounds bad, because it doesn`t -- it`s cheerful, effervescent pop, sometimes catchy, sometimes not, always engaging in its own insulated sense of fun. Ultimately, this is pretty slight stuff, but its circumstances and surrounding story make it interesting. And, truth be told, its insulation, self-conscious reverence, and miniature pop tunes really are eerily prescient of the indie pop underground of the `90s. "- AMG.

" The Jetset began with an early 80s attempt to revive the manufactured pop approach and zany personae of The Monkees, choosing to do it with massed re-channelling of 60s musical influences. What was always a questionable approach failed to ignite interest two decades on from The Jetset`s predecessors, and this double-disc reissue only raises the questions again. One disc of distinctly 60s pop where the musical reference points from sunshine pop, Monkees, Beatles, and mod pop tumble over each other is followed by the second, where they attempt to reflect the more meaningful end of McCartney`s late 60s output.
