Here is a surprise out of the blue. For Not Lamers, who have been around at least 10 years, The Mongtomerys name will be familiar as they released a few CDs in the late 90s and early part of this decade that captivated many of us. This effort has a very strong influence from XTC but he sound now has evolved into different territories here(though, you certainly can hear the Partridge sounds coming in and out of focus here), expanding with more exploratory and expansive, challenging song arrangements and flirting with a strong Ray Davies pivoting point. A most welcome evolutionary step. The songs incorporate jangly guitar riffs, tight melodies, drums that pull you through the song like a worried mother in a mall, and bass so deep rooted you may expect a tree to jut out. Inspired by the traditional songwriting style of bands like The Kinks and The Beatles, The Montgomerys blend rock and roll calassicism with a modern edge. Genuine passion, pop sensibility, and honest lyricism are some of their greatest virtues. Employing straightforward imagery and at times trenchant lyricism, they paint a picture that is both personally affected and open to interpretation. The album is both immediate and a grower, at the same time. How can it be both? Easy "Walkie Talkie" deals with the breakdown of modern communication so it challenging subject matter that is compelling but, at times, challenging. Really good music that extends beyond the temporal has this component but the music is that delivers the message is so remarkably engaging it is a true pleasure, beginning to end. A most welcome return and one that will find connection, resonance and pleasure for many of you!
