REAL rock ‘n roll! UK compilation, 2 CDs. 2008 digitally remastered collection from the UK rockers (known as the London Quireboys in the U.S.), compiled and produced with full involvement of the band Featuring original single versions of hits, B-sides, unreleased tracks, demos, album tracks and live favorites released during their heyday 1988-93. Includes extended notes, quotes from Quireboys frontman Spike and rare photos. “Frontman Spike still has his Rod Stewart / Ian Lloyd sore-throat vocal stylings down pat (and if you think he's unaware of the similarities, don't forget that the band covered "Brother Louie" a while ago), and Guy Griffin near misses a chance to display his Chuck Berry/Keith Richard guitar chugga-chuggas. The result, when it's cohesive, sounds like a jam between Stewart and the Black Crowes. THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL is derivative; but what isn't these days? With The Stones held at mercy by the acting whims of their frontman, and the Black Crowes more often than not reduced to a jam band, this is the closest we're probably gonna get to a genuine, mass market, rock CD this year. We could do much, much worse. While there aren't really any standout classics on THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL, you'll be playing this every few months or so for years to give yourself a solid, if momentary, kick in the head.” – MusicReviewer.com.
