THIS PERFECT DAY - Setting Thin: Best & Rarities (2 CDs)

Swedish Import. 2 CD set!! One CD is a 16 track best that has all kinds of classic tracks from this influential Swedish rock/power pop band and the other has 17 songs of Demos, rare singles and B-Sides! Swede-Heaven. This was like a more hard rocking version of fellow Swedes Eggstone and Beagle. Light, they were not.

“Setting Things Straight” is a 2CD take on ten recording years with TPD. Most of the first CD presents bona fide hit stuff. Including the cross over smash “Fishtank” and for the first time on an album “Oh Susie” - the quite different cover version of an 80’s novelty hit. The second CD is dominated by stuff from cassettes (remember them?), early vinyl singles, CD single b-sides, and rare demo sessions. But CD 2 also features the never before released 1998 recording “Circles”, initially planned to be on a 1998 compilation. This 33 track compilation embraces a musical transition both charming and in one way frustrating, more on that aspect later. It unveils the rather Morrisseyesque first steps on the debut single “Set Things Straight”, and also one example of TPD walking Cure landscapes, “Sensitive Toy”. But “Setting Things Straight” is mainly a parade of songs that is distinctly This Perfect Day. The material from the 1992 debut album and on can at occasions showcase aspects borrowed from band heroes like Go-Betweens, Camper van Beethoven, The Triffids and The Smiths. But in the end it’s still a unique sound with roots spiralling backwards through punk way back to Mersey beat.

On their “Don’t Smile” album: “4 ½ stars. The guitars are turned up to the max on every track, completely washing the ten-song cycle in distortion and feedback. The effect is tremendous, as quick comparisons could easily be made to other excellent discs like Oasis' Definitely Maybe, Matthew Sweet's 100% Fun, and Silver Sun's self-titled debut. Album highlights also include the sizzling single "It's a Shame" and the summery title track.”-AMG. On their debut album, Rubber Soul: “4 stars. This Perfect Day's debut album, Rubber Soul, may not share much with the Beatles' masterpiece of the same name, but it is nevertheless an appealing pop collection. The Swedish group builds from the melodic innocence of early Beatles and the jangling alt-pop of the '80s, tempering it all with a slight suggestion of new wave and punk-pop. Lyrically, the group's a little lightweight, but they have a stronger sense of songcraft than many of their Swede-pop peers, and that's the reason why Rubber Soul is such a charming, winning debut.”- AMG.
