A fascinating release. The Foul And The Fragrant evokes such sweet musings and remembrances of some truly great bands that dont get mentioned here too often, The Waterboys and Del Amitri. Not only are some of the gorgeous, sublimely driving melodies of both of these bands present here, but vocally the band evokes the spirit of Mike Scott in a very warmly endearing manner adding a rustic, almost-folk-like charm to the proceedings. The heroic guitar chords, thunderous, acoustic build ups add much intensity and passion
on every track. Even though it shares nothing with it(that I am aware of)
the spirit of Ireland/Scotland wafts up throughout "Dead In The Center"(which, btw, has a bonus video on the making of the record). The Foul & The Fragrant reveal themselves to be crafters of unusual, yet vintage melodies, complex lyrical subject matter, and recordings that are deceptively simple but constructed with the precision of Swiss watchmaker. Surely, will finish in one of 2006`s very best - it`s that special.
