UK import, expensive but, woo-boy is this a great release for power
pop fans
who are stickler for vocals. TheProcession are an LA based outfit who
specialise in songs that combine the power pop of the early ¹70s with the
friendly harmonic style of the ¹60s. As such, they fall somewhere
between UK
indie-pop rockers The Feeling, retro ¹70s standard-bearers Supertramp,
Jellyfish and The Shins."Wallowing in the glory days of bands such as
Raspberries and Big Star, this American/British trio flirt with
pastiche and
new-forms-from-old and new forms just about edge it. You¹re unlikely to
press `play` on your MP3 gizmo in, say, 2010 and marvel at how perfectly
Musique Magnifique sums up 2007 1966, more like. Yet there is
something so
winning about zip-along, close-harmony songs such as `Don¹t Let Go,`
`In the
Least` and `Sandra` that the Procession¹s nostalgia fest is one you
want to
celebrate rather than shun." -The London Times "They¹re very
hard to
dislike, courtesy of their infectious, breezy style. The feel-good
quality
of their songwriting was best exemplified by the release earlier this
year
of Don¹t Let Go, an utterly breezy slice of Beatles-influenced indie-pop
that boasts some excellent guitar work and fine vocal melodies
rather like
listening to The Bees or The Shins in their prime. The guitar work hooked
you in from the outset, while the hopelessly catchy chorus was
terrific for
singing along to. That track also came with the B-side Don¹t Hesitate, a
similarly disarming blend of kooky beats and lively piano chords that
show
just how musically rich their music is. Both songs appear on the debut
album
Musique Magnifique, a disarming experience that just keeps getting better
with each listen. Further highlights come in the form of MTV Song, a nice
blend of guitar licks, hammond organs and vocal harmonies copied right
out
of The Shins and The Beach Boys¹ copybooks. Major And Minor is pure ¹70s
kitsch as breezy, hopeful and organ-laden as any of Supertramp¹s best
known tracks (or The Feelings acute sense of
hopefulness)."-IndieLondon.
"The Procession¹s debut album [Musique Magnifique] arrives with a welcome
jolt, all shimmering melodies, upbeat guitar riffs and more pop
sensibility
than you can shake a stick at. Its simplicity and stripped-backed
appeal is
all part of its charm and, given a couple of spins, the album¹s
highlights
stick with the listener. Highlights, such as the debut single ÂDon¹t
Let Go¹
and ÂLiving Alone¹ possess the effortless radio-friendly feel of
Sixties pop
and will ensure this band build by word of mouth." -Music Week.
Expensive,
but there`s no finer album I can think of that I`d like to listen to
right
now and later today and tomorrow!
