2007 new Studio Release! For Not Lamers, The Scruffs are legendary and this is their strongest studio effort since their 1977 debut "Wanna Meet The Scruffs"! Recorded in several intensive sessions over a year at CaVa Sound in Glasgow, Scotland. Mixed and mastered recently at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Stephen Burns wanted to make this a really interesting record based on the songs, performances and orchestration. At times there would be two Scruffs, one a pop group which at times would step aside for an alter-ego orchestrated band. Burns composed the remaining songs in both America and in Glasgow. "Nearly 30 years later, Burns returned to Ardent with his current incarnation of the band, where he`s backed by a trio of Scottish fans, for a record that veers more into Beatlesque pop, rootsy classic rock, and gentle psychedelia, but it still sounds like the Scruffs. ("There`s a Girl I Know," "Karrie Anne"). Grade: "B"."-Memphis Flyer. A quick history on The Scruffs: The Scruffs are a pop music group founded by writer/guitarist/vocalist Stephen Burns, guitarist David Branyan, and drummer Zeph Paulson in Memphis, Tennessee circa 1975. The first album by the group, released in 1977, was entitled Wanna Meet The Scruffs? and remains a cult classic in the genre of power pop. Although from Memphis, The Scruffs projected an English pop style, and were occasionally accompanied on stage by Big Star legend Alex Chilton.[citation needed] Although they officially disbanded in 1979, a second album was released after 20 years (although recorded in 1979-80) titled TeenAge Gurls. This release was accompanied by the first CD release of "Wanna Meet the Scruffs?" Additional collections include: Angst, The Early Years, a collection of earlier recordings and MidTown, a release of recordings made by Stephen Burns and various musicians during the 1980`s. During the late 1990`s, Burns moved for a time to Glasgow, Scotland where he hooked up with local musicians to release a revival version of a similar group with Love, The Scruffs and Swingin` Singles. Although now living back in the United States, he continues to work in Glasgow and has recently finished recording a revival Scruffs album, "Pop Manifesto".
