For any power pop or new wave fans who around in the late 70s and followed all the comings and comings of the hundreds of bands who came on the scene then and read Bomp and Trouser Press religiously, you may recall reading about The Speedies, a New York-based power pop band of cute high school boys who buzzed the scene then but who never got an album out. Well, the story is here in this 19 song collection and it is a shame because this band would have been more strong remembered in a truly fond, nostalgic manner if they did, but the music has survived. Listen below, but we think many Not Lamers will celebrate this release. It is like a mixture of The Vapors, early The Records, The Understones, The Sinceroes. For a New York band, they sound more influenced by the U.K. happenings of the time, which was a bit uncommon in 1978/79. "Strong efforts by the Speedies (`You Need Pop`) hardcore power pop fans will most assuredly want to get their hands on this sucker" - Entertainment Weekly. "When The Speedies` - backing vocals tell you You Need Pop (pop pop pop pop), you`ll bob your head in manic agreement - yes yes yes yes! I need Pop" - Eopinions. Some old press on the band includes: "The Speedies are an exuberant band" (Lisa Robinson, The New York Post) "The Speedies are on top of everything now; their rough ingredients may turn into America`s Best Pop Band" (Tim Sommers, NY Underground). This is a small, limited pressing done lovingly by fans, who undoubtedly would not do a second pressing as these types of love-projects rarely are able to do so. VERY Highly Recommended!
