2006 release from Matt Langlois`s The Welcome Matt. This is third and
clearly his most inspired and strongest effort to date. The Welcome Matt
simultaneously defies the singer-songwriter stigma and fills the niche so
well it attains an entirely fresh plane of existence. Langlois` songs emerge
straight from the heart with a keen sense of musical dynamics, his
expressive voice, and melodies that soothe the soul. Singer-songwriters come
along a dime a dozen, but the truly eloquent ones are priceless. Previous
efforts had a strong Ray Davies inspiration, but here he finds his own voice
inside this songs blending subtle affectations of his previous inspirations
and adding tasty blendings of Jeff Tweedy, Willie Nile, Jeff Buckley, John
Lennon, Graham Parker and Freedy Johnston. The songs don`t plant an tall,
easy-to-discern flag on top of their influences, taking a different, no less
confident, path to their musical and lyrical statements. The Welcome Matt
is simply a consistently strong, always impressive, entertaining and punchy
display of pop prowess. Always delivered with great taste, "Right Outside
Your Door" is aptly named as it`s release whose haunting charms are slow to
release but as they do, it`s clear the album is first-class job, beginning
to end. "The music is honest, full of bittersweet integrity and
maintains an infallible sincerity"- BettermentLettersMusic.com. "Give a
warm welcome to Matt Langlois and his latest foray into pop smarts. Meaning
this is smart pop indeed. The man never keeps still musically and Matt
always keeps it interesting throughout. Good references include Elvis
Costello & Graham Parker with less vitriol and a solid measure of Freedy
Johnston to boot. Chock full of sweet melodies, intriguing arrangements and
generally cool vibes."-POwerOfPop. Extremely Highly Recommended.
