Fresh, interesting, hooky guitar pop with interesting lyrics and uplifting energy and each CD not only professionally manufactured it manages to have each one have custom, hand-drawn(nicely done!) art work for the entire package - something that usually does not go together. Not sure how many of these have been made, but I gather not many so don`t hang on the fence too long is our experience. Anyway, the music here a real delight reminding us a bit of a more, say, middle-of-the-road Tommy Keene in parts. The haunting "Mirrorball Inside You"(last soundbite below) begins things and you know right away you have dealing with an artist with a unique approach to his craft with its haunting Mid-Western rock(think BoDeans, 54-40). The title track, produced by Brad Jones, reminds me of an updated Let`s Active track from "Big Plans For Everybody", that`s how good that one is! I have to be honest, the first listen of "Mystic Chords Of Memory" I found merely pleasant but the second one was one of those `Oh, I `get` it" such is our inner ears` conditioning sometimes to looking for the easiest way to digest music. Subsequent listens bring thanks that Caufield finally brings this material out of the closet and into our lives. "There`s something here for everyone, which kind of makes sense as this is a
sampling of songs he`s written over the years rather than for a single
album. So you get a mix of regular power pop, singer/songwriter material,
soft pop and roots rock, all in one disc. Plus, Brad Jones produced the
title track. What more can you ask for? Highlight: "First Girl on the
Moon."-AbsolutePowerPopBLog. Tom Caufield for those geeks who care about such things was an original member of Cincinatti`s legendary The Raisins in the 70s(a band I maintain was the best pub pop band ever when I saw them many times in the early 80s), who went onto become Psychodots and The Bears w/ Adrian Belew(members who appear here). This collection is the first volume of him trolling through over 100 songs he`s collected over the years and it`s a trove of fascinating pop music that does not play by the rules and really searches out interesting musical contexts and melodies not usually played around with by most artists. The 16 songs here are their own reward and it is Very Highly Recommended!
