Where did rock n roll with a simple kick-ass melody go on us? Well, consider it found again with True Love`s third album "Wings" rocking back into the focus a hark-the-heralding display of unpretentious, pumping, thumping, melodious rock n roll. What does True Love sound like? Only the very best offerings in the righteous, heavenly spirit of Sloan, Fountains Of Wayne, Superdrag, Nada Surf, Candy Butchers and Butch Walker/Marvelous 3,
that *is* what! As with all their material, the songs are driven by
sparkling guitar lines with massive hooks punching their way to the front of the line and layered harmonies with big swelling hooks we talked sticking to each of the songs like fly paper. Each song will sneak into your head and hatch melodies that will resurface in the form of a hum or foot tap for days. Yeah. Simply, it`s a swaggering display of classic NYC styled rock with a sweet punchy center core. "The trio of Ray Kubian, Keith Hartel and Tom The Squirrel Beaujour do not mess around with the format that made sophomore effort "I Was Accident"- so enjoyable. So expect loads of driving guitars, pummelling rhythms and strong melodies to dominate the proceedings. There are mid-tempo numbers that provide the welcome breaks in pace "Hot Toddy", "Asleep At the Wheel" & "Old Building" but on the whole, one should strap oneself securely and then press play"-Night Times. "Hard-driving guitar rock and power pop(leavened by the occasional jangly ballad) are the order of the day on Wings..sometimes seen as Richard Lloyd`s backing band, True Love crank out unpretentious old-school rock to rival members of a certain rock `n roll Mt. Rushmore, in this case Plimsouls/Raspberries/Neighborhoods/Cheap Trick..a a band near the top of the power pop class circa 2005!"-PopCulturePress.
"4 stars.. Wings, the bands third effort, earns the band the dubious distinction of playing mature power pop a fact that essentially seals its fate as a commercial failure and critical success. There could be worse fates, as Wings should storm through the power-pop underground with enough force to make True Love an act long-in-the-tooth fans of guitar pop will cherish. Finding more depth than its previous efforts, Wings sees True Love shifting through all the power-pop gears, revving up its motor to race through a rush of 70s melodies. True, True Love isnt reinventing the wheel on this one, but it sure gives it a balance and alignment job. "How Does It Feel?" gets moving with a classic, mid-70s dose of crunchy ear-candy guitars as the vocal tracks drawl gives the song depths that the genres often sticky-sweet vocals cant touch. "Decay" brims with all the no-frills fun of a trio of friends seeped in years of Big Star and Superdrag jamming in the garage, with loose guitar and bass melodies supporting three-part harmonies that should tickle the ears of any pop fanatic. "The Crime" and "Pacific Coast West is Blue" crackle and pop with pure power-pop delight, while "All Was Lost" and "Old Building" ease off the throttle and give listeners a chance to catch their breath with jangly, gooey and teary-eyed pop. True Loves bag of tricks isnt filled with the gargantuan hooks of acts such as Weezer or the soppiness of Ultimate Fakebook lyrics, but thats because the band has a strong enough grasp on power-pop subtleties not to need the gimmicks that smack of juvenile delights. Instead, Wings plays it straightforward, relying upon the trios powerful command of pops basic tools - melody and pacing - for an album with all the snap needed to win over a grownups sweet tooth."-Aversion.com. " Everything I know about power pop I learned from Patrick Bateman and True Love. The New Jersey groups new CD, Wings, teems with the genre defining vocal harmonizing and cheery, solid guitar riffs."-KaffeineBuzz.com.
What else to like, nah, love about True Love? It does not take a masters degree to know that great rock `n roll must have guitars that are not shy to shift into overdrive at a moment`s notice, preferably when the listener least expects but does not leave that music fan in the dust but only with an airy sensation of the wind of the music blowing thru the soul looking for spirit of `the rock`. "Wings" gives it up here. The shake-your-booty spirit, the lashings of fast paced fun and sexy high voltage attitude is hanging here, too. What on earth are you waiting for?! Get with the program and rock those melodies up high with True Love! "3/ 1/2 stars. Power pop torchbearers True Love deliver a gutting slab of melodic rock on their third studio release, Wings. If the title and cover art are meant as a humorously ironic allusion to Paul McCartney's post-Beatles group, the music therein also takes a similarly opposing direction from Macca's soft rock/AOR. Much like their guitar-heavy self-titled sophomore release, True Love rip through a series of über-melodic and somewhat emotionally pyrrhic mini-rock epics that bring to mind such icons of the genre as Cheap Trick, the Replacements, Elvis Costello, and others. This is pretty great stuff that will obviously appeal to the pop underground faithful, but deserves a much wider audience."-AMG.
