V/A - International Pop Overthrow (IPO) - Vol. 8 (3 CD`s)

FOUND COPIES OF THIS!! Been gone for years! 3 CD set of pure power pop! That`s what you have here with Volume 8. Yes, EIGHT. Wow! David Bash and his amazing labor of pop love travel the world now to bring the message of great music to not only the fans of power pop, but music fans at large; the ones who go `power pop?!?!` These festivals are done in Los Angeles, Liverpool, Boston, New York City, Chicago and Nashville and, sometimes, other places. Each year, when The International Pop Overthrow Festival comes to LA, David lets us press up a *limited* bunch of the CD to help make available to all the folks who can`t make it to LA. As usual there is a large mix of previously unreleased songs, rare songs and upcoming releases mixed in with previously available trax. The 3 CD`s here have, gulp, 65 songs on them, including a rare unreleased track from Jim Ellison of legendary band Material Issue and a rare track from The Micheal Guthrie Band!

Other highlights include upcoming trax from Not Lame releases from Pat Buchanan(Idle Jets), The Everyday Things and Fresh Mowed Lawn(Tim Rose from Sun Sawed In 1/2), as well as trax from Mark Johnson, The Tearaways, The Afternoons, Sparkwood, The Oohs, Phamous Phaces, sparkle*jets UK, Ben`s Diapers, Blue Cartoon, The Rhinos and tons of new bands we have never even heard of before this arrived!

What A Blast
Reviewer: Patricia  Callhan
I picked one of these up at the LA IPO and have been hooked since. There are a lot tracks here and of course, some real standouts. I was of course thrilled to hear the (I believe) unreleaed Ellison track as I am a huge MI fan. Other tracks that I love are The Confusions' The Pilot (I know this would have been a hit in the '80;s), She's Going Down by Little Engine (pure guitar pop and great vocals), the fantastic and haunting Beatles song For No One by Valley Downs and, wow, that is just on the first disc. I think all pop fans will love this collection and with so many songs, there are lots of jems to be found.

the Coolest!

Wow! I got my copy at one the five or so L.A. IPO shows I attended. I can say is these IPO compilations keep getting better. There's 65 songs on this 3 CD set, how can anyone choose a favorite? Standouts for me: Jeremy's "Upside Down"; Little Engine's Lovin' Spoonful-ish "She's Going Down; The Shamus Twin's jangley British Invasion-ish "Life Is Strange" (I missed their set - dang!); and a cool live recording from back in the day by The Trend called "She's Hi-Fi". Each of the three discs have enough very good cuts to keep the entire set in your CD changer. A lot of the pop here is of the New-Wave '70's-'80's style, or so it sounds to me. But overall, it does run the gamut from Jingle-Jangle to Punky-pop. You can't get bored with all this good music! Can't wait for next year!
