The Tickets - S/T Sugar Mountain - In The Raw

The Joys Of Classic Indie Power Pop And Classic Rock

Two great, very different releases to talk about here.

Walter Clevenger has a label. You should know about it. It's called Brewery Records and on top of releasing his own CDs and the excellent Nick Lowe Tribute, "Lowe Profile", he's finished two absolutely great, yes great, releases.

What are they?

Before we go there's, an announcement.

At the bottom, Not Lame and Brewery Records have carved out a special offer yet again of exclusive, rare material to anyone picking up either of these releases from Not Lame. So check that out below.

First up, we have The Tickets, a classic, old-school, skinny tie power pop band from Orange County, CA that no one has heard of. There's a reason why, but it sure is not because of the pop these guys made! It's playing right now in your browser, more than likely. Scan thru all the tracks here and revel in memories of past pure power pop faves The Tickets harken back to: The Producers, Hawks, Marshall Crenshaw, Squeeze. "The Tickets" sounds like something from the digital age, with Beatles-styled harmonies layered atop ringing guitars and in-the-pocket rhythms that equal the strong songs themselves."-Orange County Register.

The Tickets existed from 1985-1995 and made one, cassette only album in 1990. We have that album here, re-mastered and re-mixed with 4 bonus trax tacked on.

This is the kind of find that Not Lame gets all giddy about, but it's part of the passion that has fueled our excitement for bringing voice, amplitude and the music to fans of the genre for 12 years. God Bless Walter Clevenger for bringing this band out of the shadows!

Next Up from Brewery Records is Sugar Mountain, a different kind of musical animal, but empowered by the same vision as The Tickets. Sugar Mountain is a classic rock band that you will not be embarrassed to crank up in anyone's presence, such is the pure, unadulterated, archetypal joy and talent of Sugar Mountain to mine their influences of early 70's Faces and Rolling Stones! Produced by Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (the Yayhoos, Del Lords, Steve Earle, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts), Dan Baird of Georgia Satellites(and someone who *knows* this!) said this about Sugar Mountain a few weeks ago:

"Loved them the first time I saw them! They sound like everything I like all shook up and played as hard as they know how!"

For those who remember the first time they heard The Black Crowes and freaked out, Sugar Mountain presents the same opportunity to mine that feeling once again. Fans of Terry Anderson, classic early Rod Stewart/The Faces, Georgia Satellites, early 70s Rolling Stones, Bash & Pop, Son Volt and The Yayhoos will want this - badly!

Get this, though: these dudes are not an American Rock band, but are from Spain - and they do the American-styled classic rock thing better than 99% of the bands attempting it these days! Yup, this album is sure to garner Sugar Mountain a whole new batch of American fans, rightfully so. This is *the sound*, man. Oh yeah, this CD features a video documentary on the making of In The Raw as well as a bonus track of the band covering The Kinks' "Picture Book."

Sugar Mountain show their love for real rock 'n roll with an album full of powerful riffs, infectious grooves and catchy melodies, all played with the swagger and attitude that are lacking in so many of today's bands and still pull of a timeless sounding gem. It sounds amazing, too. Bsides Ambel's production, "In The Raw" was mixed by Greg Duffin (Robbie Fulks, Wilco, Marshall Crenshaw) and mastered by Scott Hull (Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Herbie Hancock). These guys don't mess around!
