The 1990`s - Cookies

THIS is some debut. Buzz band in the UK, doubt it will connect in the US - but it should. Although the trio, led by wiry vocalist/guitarist Jackie McKeown, shares some similar post-punk sensibilities with the dapper Franz Ferdinand, the 1990s are more rooted in a cheeky Stones/Kinks aesthetic, a point hit home by the witty, raucous "Cult Status." While the group excels at loose-limbed rockers (see the bouncy opener, "You Made Me Like It"), the 1990s also charm on slower, dreamier numbers, particularly on the breezily nostalgic tune "Arcade Precinct." Another fine addition to Glasgow's impressive pop/rock lineage, the 1990s will easily appeal to fans of other likeminded U.K. acts, most notably the Arctic Monkeys and Art Brut.

A few reviews have described this as �post-punk masterpiece�, and they�re not too far off. Think more like an upbeat Strokes, if they had a sense of humor. Every song is a rocker, mixing a real New York garage sound with witty lyrics with incredible ease. The song �Cult Status� is a classic unto itself�I think this is my new theme song. This album will have you pogoing around the house in no time, air guitar in hand. (LF) "4 stars.
