Quote me: will be on my Top 10 or 20 of the year, easily! THIS is the best Willie Nile
ever! Reminds me most of the feeling I had when I heard Ryan Adams` "Gold". If you hated that album, well, stop wasting your time reading this, this is not for you. Great, great songs. Though the songwriting remains as heartfelt as ever, with plenty of
literary flourish, antiseptic arrangements all but drain the propulsion from "Welcome to My Head" and "Best Friends Money Can Buy," while the slow build of "Faded Flower of Broadway" flirts with power-ballad mawkishness. The epic narrative of the autobiographical "Back Home" and the harmonic-laced "Lonesome Dark-Eyed Beauty" find Nile giving his best Bob Dylan impression (Dylan`s son Jakob, of the Wallflowers, guests elsewhere on the album), though the title track edges closer to Billy Joel territory. Only the heart-pumping urgency of "Whole World with You" and the feverish cover of Eddy Grant`s "Police on My Back" (in homage to the Clash) show Nile really letting it rip as he as in the past. " His Ian Hunter-meets-Paul Westerberg vocal is most commanding, full of sly `n` wry wit and soulful conviction. Not to mention a compelling marriage of both well-read and street-wise prose where lyrics are concerned. Throw this down over punchy pop and roots influenced rock, or the occasional "Jersey-style" ballad, and you`ve got music that sounds compelling. With nods to Dylan ("Back Home") and The Clash ("When One Stands", "Police On My Back"), Nile exhibits a respectable span of influence that, along with a kick-ass band, defies sounding dated. The streets of New York have a voice in Willie Nile."-MOM.
