THE SELMANAIRES - Air Salesman

GREAT release! Not often one can say an album sounds a lot like �Remain In The Light�-era Talking Heads(although only one � songs) AND rocks. (Listen to songs #2 below, in particular) Strange, but it�s true. �Yes, The Selmanaires wear their influences like a nice vintage scarf. So while you may realize these young men love Talking Heads, The Kinks, Devo, The Beatles and so on, it`s subtle enough that it never overwhelms. You say you`ve heard it all before, but I say it simply adds a familiar nuance to already impressive songwriting.�-Paste. he band describe themselves thusly: "the bastard lovechild of a 60s band (i.e. Kinks, Beatles, Zombies) and a 70s band (Devo, Talking Heads, Roxy Music). Sometimes we sound like Can. sometimes, we sound like lots of people.". Bottom Line? This baby has soul and verve!

�The Air Salesmen overflows with mimicry of the highest order, but it all sounds like sincere homage instead of shameless lifting. In the end, the Selmanaires do end up refining their sound, carving out a ledge for themselves near the top of the New-New Wave mountain. They�re just that good The New Wave revival is already starting to play itself out, so it�s odd to see a band throw themselves so fully into the movement. However, the Selmanaires are pretty obviously true believers, and if The Air Salesmen proves anything, it�s that they may be one of the few bands capable of taking the genre somewhere new.�-PopMatters. �3 � stars.
