Classic SP all over the place here! As long time fans, every time a new Sugarplastic song arrives, there`s an air of aural anticipation hard to put into words, there`s a king of sculptural kind of beauty going on w/ their material. You just know they`ll be some new twist, some new way with their quirkly melodies that will have you smiling, hitting repeat and saving on the `ole Ipod. The XTC inspiration is here, of course. Only Sugarplastic are more than just parroting influences, this is an experiment of creativity for the band as they explore complex guitar chords, melodic shadings, old time (as in 30`s, 40`s!) hooks and unusually lyrical journeys. Not familiar with them? This is the place to begin with what`s in print and available, no doubt. Quoting Stewart Mason from AMG, this an most accurate overview of their special gifts: " Eshbach`s a gifted songwriter with a knack for nervy, tension-building verses that shift into hooky choruses, giving the album as a whole a tension-and-release feel akin to the late-`70s new wave/pop that`s the band`s clear primary influence. Eshbach`s lyrics are that rarity -- lyrics that actually deserve to be printed in the CD booklet; quirky without being self-conscious, the lyrics are full of clever rhymes, wordplay, and interesting images". There`s not many bands like Sugarplastic out there, support and enjoy what they bring, now, today. "At the heart of this album is frontman Ben
Eshbachs unique guitar style, where he seems to play
notes in a circular fashion.Eshbach has said that The Monochrome Set was the initial inspiration for how he plays, and that makes sense. Like XTC and The Monochrome Set, The Sugarplastic have perfected a sound that mixes odd, dissonant sounds with pure melodies. I do know that this music means something to the folks who are playing on it. What they have created is an album that stands out from the crowd, and its unforgettable."-MikeBennett, Fufkin.com Extremely Highly Recommended.
