This is very, very, VERY Not Lame-ish pop record. “4 ½ stars. This has the heft and depth of a mature and accomplished album. The songs are rough, scratchy and loud, but purposefully so, and there's plenty of room made for catchy melody in the midst of their sprawling pop. Like the most moving of The Replacements sober tunes, What Doesn't is an album you don't want to sing along to--it's one you want to yell along to. It just feels that real, and that utterly contagious. This is an album of songs you will enjoy the first time through but that will continue to surprise you with each subsequent listen. The songs are up-tempo, like the witty, catchy "To Each His Own" and "For The Birds." The songs are sentimental and pained, like the down-ward looking "Prevailing Wind" and "The Other Side." The songs are rowdy and strong, like "Blood, Sweat & Fears" and "Sultan." And yet every track has the trademark earnest, emotive thrust of this band. No track feels like a dud; nothing here is filler. This is pop music as it's meant to be. After three listens the word "pop" didn't even occur to me. Only later, when I turned the CD off and the melodies were still there, floating around, having conversations, becoming a part of my daily song, did I realize this was one of "those" albums. The kind that stick in your ribs when you listen and stick in your head afterwards.“-AltMusic.com.
What Made Milwaukee Famous may unashamedly wear their pop on their sleeves, but that new-wave sheen is stretched taut over a muscular frame of sweaty rock. Milwaukee’s energetic, forceful, and impassioned music feels immediately familiar. Michael Kingcaid’s laid-back vocals swoon and swagger in and out of the bands rolling melodies, and although sonically polished the music maintains just enough rough edges to keep things interesting. What Made Milwaukee Famous trade in a genre full of archetypes, and with a practiced hand they deftly weave sentimentality, a reflective, wry wit, and an ear for the timeless into a sonic basket carrying the best of indie rock, 70’s power pop, and modern rock radio. "Positively exuberant, teeming with squiggly keys, extroverted hooks, and brightly anthemic guitar, all grounded by Michael Kingcaid's mellifluous croon" – Spin. Not a bad track here, not even close. This just catapulted onto the Top 5 of 2008 so far, list. THAT great, “Yes”. Song #1 - mp3
